Arizona Driver License

To obtain an Arizona driver’s license you should apply to your local MVD office or to the authorized third-party driver license provider.

To apply for your DL you should submit the Arizona driver’s license application.

So, there are three types of licenses you can apply for:

Arizona Driver’s License Types

There are almost 6 types of driver’s license classes, and for each license type, there’s a corresponding type of instruction permit.

Class D driver’s license

To clarify, a class D driver’s license will allow you to drive any vehicle that doesn’t require a motorcycle or commercial license. But, you can obtain this license if you are 18.

Class G driver’s license

In short, class G is a graduate driver’s license for teenagers between 16 and 18 years of age.

Class A driver’s license

In short, this type of license will allow you to drive vehicles hauling a trailer that is 10,001 pounds (GVWR) or more where the combined GVWR is 26,001 pounds or more.

Class B driver’s license

That is to say, the class B driver’s license allows you to operate heavyweight vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.

Class C driver’s license

That is to say, this license allows you to drive vehicles capable of carrying 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or vehicles required to be placarded for hazardous materials.

These A, B, C license types are called the commercial driver license (CDL).

Class M driver’s license

In short, if you want to drive a motorcycle, you will need to obtain a Class M driver’s license. But, you must be 16 to be able to apply for the class M driver’s license.

Arizona Driver License Requirements

For each type of license, there are common steps that you need to take:

Instruction permit

In short, the Arizona instruction permit will let you gain a driving experience. But, you should drive with a supervisor who is at least 21 and has a full license. This will help you to apply for the graduated license.

How to apply

1. Firstly, make an appointment and apply at your local MVD office or authorized third-party driver license provider.
2. Secondly, submit the application form. You can do it online or when you visit the MVD office.
3. Thirdly, visit the MVD office or authorized third-party driver license provider’s office with one of your parents, if they are married. To clarify, if your parents are divorced they should both come and sign the application with you.
4. After that, pass a vision test. You must have uncorrected vision of 20/40 or better in at least one eye.
5. Then pass a written knowledge test.

The required documents and payments

You should submit your Social Security number and a document that verifies:

• Your identity and date of birth
• Your Arizona residency
• If you are not a US citizen a proof that your presence in the US is authorized under federal law.

The cost of the instruction permit is $7. You will receive the permit within 15 days.

Graduated License (Class G license)

In short, with this license, you can drive any type of car that doesn’t require a special Class of license. Moreover, you can drive alone most of the time, except:

• Driving with more than one passenger under the age of 18, unless they are your siblings or your parent is in the front seat.
• For the first 6 months, you are not allowed to drive between midnight and 5 a.m. But, if you are driving with your parent in the front seat, or you are driving to or from work, school, etc., or because of a family emergency, you can drive alone.

How to apply

1. Firstly, complete a supervised driving practice. You will need to submit a document to prove that you have completed 30 hours of supervised driving practice.
2. Secondly, complete the application form. You can do it either online or in-person in the MVD office. Visit the office with one of your parents if they are married. They should also sign the application.
3. After that, pass the road test. You may schedule the day at the local MVD office or authorized third-party office.

You should submit your Social Security number and a document that verifies:

• Your identity and date of birth
• Your Arizona residency
• If you are not a US citizen a proof that your presence in the US is authorized under federal law.

The cost of the license is $25. You will receive the permit within 15 days.

Your class G license will have a vertical format. When you turn 18 you can apply for the class D driver’s license. But, it is not a must. Your Class D license will still have the same vertical format to show that you are under 21.

Full License

If you are already 18 and you have a graduate license you can upgrade it to a full class D license in the MVD office. But, But, it is not a must.

Your Class D license will still have the same vertical format to show that you are under 21.

If you don’t have a class G license, you should apply for the full class D license.

How to apply

1. Firstly, you should apply in person at your local MVD office or an authorized third-party driver license provider. But, you can schedule an appointment before.
2. Secondly, complete the application form either inline or in person.
3. Thirdly, pass a written knowledge test.
4. After that, pass the road test.

The required documents and payments

You should submit your Social Security number and a document that verifies:

• Your identity and date of birth
• Your Arizona residency
• If you are not a US citizen a proof that your presence in the US is authorized under federal law.

The cost of the license depends on your age. If you are from 18 to 39 it is $25; from 40 to 44 $20; from 45 to 49 $15; and from 50 and older $10.

You will receive the license within 15 days.

Arizona Driver’s License Renewal

The standard Arizona driver’s license expires when an individual turns 65. After that, you will need to renew your license every 5 years.

You will need to pass a vision test and pay $10. Also, take a photo of yourself and submit your expired driver’s license.

And, you cannot renew your license online. You can replace your license online if it is lost or damaged, your address has changed or you want to upgrade your class G license.
